Seaside is the second-largest city in Monterey County, with a population of roughly 30,000 to 35,000 people spread across about 9 square miles. It sits on the southern end of Monterey Bay, bordering Marina to the north, Sand City to the west, and Del Rey Oaks to the south. Much of the city sits on land that was once part of Fort Ord, a large U.S. Army base that closed in 1994 - today that same land is home to California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and Fort Ord National Monument, open to the public for hiking and biking.

A large share of Seaside's homes were built between the 1940s and 1970s, many during the military era. Fremont Boulevard is the city's main commercial corridor, and most residential neighborhoods branch off from streets nearby. Laguna Grande Regional Park, centered on a lagoon near the heart of the city, is a landmark locals use for walking, fishing, and the weekly farmers market.
